It’s been a whirlwind weekend for George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin, newlyweds. They hosted dozens of the most famous people in the world at their Italian wedding over the weekend, and now they’re closing out the weekend with a civil ceremony. Italian law required that the duo actually make their marriage official with a private civil ceremony, which the couple got around to taking care of on Monday.

The Oscar winner and his attorney wife hopped onto a boat on Venice’s Grand Canal and made their way up to Ca’Farsetti, the beautiful palazzo that dates back to the 14th Century and also is home to the town hall in Venice. They were married very quickly and officially by Walter Veltroni, a close friend of Clooney’s and the mayor of Rome, and Clooney’s longtime boat driver was the couple’s witness. Mayor Veltroni also conducted the couple’s wedding ceremony on Saturday as well.

When the couple exited the town hall, they were greeted by excited fans who kept asking them how it feels to finally be a husband and a wife to one another.

“Nice!” said George Clooney, “Amazing!” said his new wife. The couple were married on Saturday at the Aman Canal Grande resort, and they joined their wedding guests for a luxe reception after they exchanged their vows. The wedding was elegance all the way, and the guests mingled and ate and drank well. Along with signature cocktails, there was a copious amount of wine (there’s nothing more appropriate in Italy) and a meal fit for a king. Guests dined on lemon risotto with lobster, chianina beef with porcini mushrooms and even lemon ricotta agnolotti and arugula pesto. It was an upscale reception all the way, and it included dancing and entertainment, as well as a “very happy couple,” said wedding guests.
