A beautifully renovated Californian bungalow provided the ultimate location for a growing family to enjoy the best the Geelong West lifestyle affords.

That point wasn’t lost on two potential buyers who contested the four-bedroom house at a spirited auction.

The 541sq m property sold for $1.595m on Saturday to a young family looking to upgrade and relocate from East Geelong.

But the buyers had their work cut out for them, with a couple from Melbourne staying the course until the price stretched $5000 beyond what they were prepared to pay.

Hodges, Geelong West agent Jeff Begg had listed the weatherboard house next to St Patrick’s primary School with $1.4m price hopes.

The bidding opened at that point and quickly reached $1.5m.

Mr Begg confirmed to crowd that was on the market after the price had reached $1.57m.

“They’re a local family that are just moving across to West from East Geelong, just to be close to Pakington St and all the things that people in West Geelong want from life and love,” Mr Begg said.

“They’re a young family so they can see themselves growing into it and enjoying it.”

Mr Begg said the underbidders had sold in Melbourne and we’re moving to Geelong for lifestyle. They also had a young child, with another on the way.

“That was a super-busy campaign for a couple of reasons – one is the house was four bedrooms, and it had a significant land parcel as well.

“And the majority of the buyers that came through were young families, upsizing from smaller properties.

“The quality of the renovation there, the location and the land size was what pushed it along and helped it sell about $159,000 above the expectations.”

The classic Californian bungalow is dripping in the grandeur, including a spacious open-plan living, dining and kitchen area at the rear of the house.

An imposing entrance hall leads past three ground-floor bedrooms and a formal living room to a living zone, which itself leads to a covered pergola in the backyard.

Upstairs is a palatial main bedroom with a dressing room and ensuite, plus a nursery or study and attic storage.
