Tom Sawyer Obituary, Death – Amanda and Daniel Kraus of Evanston, Illinois; Tom’s brother Ted and sister-in-law Margie Sawyer of Jupiter, Florida; and Joyce (née Handler), Tom’s wife of 55 years. Everyone who knew him well was in no doubt that Akron and Summit County were his extended family. This was abundantly clear to all of them.
Tom Sawyer was born in Akron, Ohio, on August 15, 1945, to a mother named Jean (née Galloway), and a father named Furman Sawyer. At the time of Tom’s birth, his parents were celebrating V-J Day and the end of World War II. His formative years were spent in the Akron area, where he also attended and graduated from Buchtel High School.

Tom is a graduate of the University of Akron, where he studied English and Education, earning degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in those respective fields. When he first entered the industry, he began his professional career working as a teacher in the Cleveland Public Schools. After that, he worked as an administrator at a state school that was dedicated to helping children and teenagers who had been adjudicated. Sawyer went on to become a legislative analyst for the Ohio Public Utilities Commission after working on campaigns for both the president of the United States and the governor of Ohio. In this capacity, he was in charge of crafting many pieces of legislation.
